Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology
Gemma graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2014 and began her career in a busy small animal practice in the greater Adelaide region. After two years in general practice, she pursued advanced specialist training through a rotating internship at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in Sydney.
Gemma subsequently relocated to Melbourne, where she completed both an ophthalmology internship and residency at Melbourne Eye Vet. During this time, she developed extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of ocular diseases and conditions in companion animals.
In recognition of her advanced training and clinical expertise, Gemma achieved Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVS) in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2025, attaining specialist status in the field.
Gemma joined Optivet Referrals in 2023 and is based at Optivet South London, where she provides specialist ophthalmic care for patients referred from across the region. She is committed to delivering the highest standard of veterinary eye care and enjoys working closely with pet owners and referring veterinarians to achieve the best possible outcomes for her patients.
Dr Álvaro Lubián Arenillas
Veterinary Ophthalmology Clinician
Alvaro graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 2019. During his studies, he developed a strong interest in ophthalmology, gaining valuable experience as a student collaborator within the university’s ophthalmology service alongside several other clinical departments.
Following graduation, Alvaro spent several months in clinical practice in Spain before relocating to Northern Ireland, where he worked in a busy mixed animal practice. It was during this time that he decided to pursue a career in veterinary ophthalmology and subsequently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Ophthalmology through UCM in 2022.
After a further year in small animal general practice in Cardiff, Alvaro joined Optivet in January 2024 to undertake an 18-month specialised internship in veterinary ophthalmology. Demonstrating his commitment to continued professional development, he also commenced a second postgraduate qualification in ophthalmology, which he completed in 2026.
In September 2025, Alvaro joined the newly established Optivet South London branch, where he continues to provide dedicated ophthalmic care and support for patients and their owners. His clinical interests encompass all aspects of veterinary ophthalmology, and he is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care while continually advancing his knowledge and skills within the specialty.
Outside of work, Alvaro enjoys playing tennis, going to the gym, hiking, and birdwatching.
